As global temperatures continue to rise, with this year projected to be among the top three hottest on record (only surpassed by 2023 & 2024), the Southwest region has already seen anomalous early heat, including triple-digit temperatures on April 10th. These conditions signal a troubling summer ahead. Research shows that when temperatures exceed 86 degrees, health impacts and emergency department visits increase across New Mexico. To mitigate these risks and ensure the safety and well-being of all New Mexicans this heat season, immediate and comprehensive action is required.
